What must I
do to be saved? Is possibly the most important question we
can
ask.
From the bible the answer may
surprise
us not ‘do this’ but ‘believe in the Lord Jesus Christ’.
It’s very difficult to define
the amount
of knowldege someone has to have to become a Christian.
The following truths are
preached at
Falmouth Evangelical Church:
1) There is only one God
2) God has three
distinct persons-
Father Son and Holy Spirit all equal and eternal.
4) God made this whole
universe in six
days and rested on the seventh establishing the importance of
distinguishing one day a week to be his in a special way.
5) Mankind was included in
the acts of
Creation and the first man and woman were given a special dignity by
being made in God’s image. This makes human life very precious.
6) Sadly the first man and
first woman
chose to diobey God’s commands and their conscience and suffered
spiritual death as a consquence.
7) Ever since then, with just
one
exception, every human bering has been born dead to God in what
the bible describes as trespasses and sins.
8) The One exception is Jesus
himself.
He was and always is fully divine but in the bible’s words ‘The Word
became flesh and dwealt amongst us’. He was born of Mary, having
been conceived by the Holy Spirit in Mry’s womb thus fulfilling the Old
Testament prophecy that the ‘Seed of the Woman would bruise the
serpent’s head’
9) Having been born perfect-
the only
person ever born so- Jesus remained absolutely perfect through
his whole life. He was never guilty of one act of sin, one wrong
thought or attitude.
10) Having lived such a
perfect life he
offered himself to God by dying upon a cross paying a ransom price to
bring people back to
God.
11) When he was dying he bore
the pains
of hell upon his own soul as well as the physical suffering of the
cross. (This is how we understand the expression from the creed: ‘he
descended into hell’).
12) Having been buried he
rose physicaly
from the dead and appeared to his disciples at different times before
ascending to heasven.
13)
God the Holy Spirit came to dwell
with and to guide the church in Jesus’ place on the day of Pentecost.
14) One day Jesus will return
to this
planet and will issue in the end of history as we know it and the
judgement of every human being by God.
15) both heaven and hell are
equally
places of eternal duration one of conscious enjoymernt of God and
rejoicing in Christ, the other of conscious loss and ruin and
punishment.
16) Not all people find the
salvation
offered to all who believe in Jesus. The Gospel (the news of Jesus’
coming and all his work and life) is to be made known to all as widely
as possible and offers salvation to all who believe.
17) Because of the sin that
renders us
helpless to please God as we are born without God’s intervention none
would believe. God therefore works to save through the work of the Holy
Spirit bringing us to new birth.
